J. Bacon &#124; tjb
Pronouns: she/her

︎&#38;nbsp;
	Publishing under the name T. J. Bacon and creating artwork
using the name tjb, Dr Tōmei June Bacon is a trans-femme pansexual person with
hidden disabilities. An interdisciplinary visual artist, scholar and author,
she is also the founder and artistic director of Tempting Failure.
She is keen to collaborate with artists, scholars and activists who foreground
transdisciplinary applications of artistic practice with social engagement and
particularly welcomes the consideration of strategies that advocate for
transgender inclusion and celebration.

BackgroundBorn in 1980, she has exhibited artwork internationally for over 20+ years.
From 2001 to 2008, this work spanned writing, theatre direction, public
interventions, club performances, live art, cabaret, and visual art. From 2009,
refining her craft through experimentation she began focusing on solo practices
in noise and performance art, exploring phenomenological perception,
researching and establishing the notion of a multiplicity of self/s, while her
curatorial, directorial, and producing work delved into themes of risk and
failure. In 2012, she founded Tempting Failure, an international performance
art festival that has supported over 800 artists to date. By 2017, her solo
practice started to align with her emerging understanding of her gender
identity, sexuality, and disabilities. This began by unpacking indoctrination
from growing up under the UK’s oppressive Section 28 law, which had erased
queer representation in education, deeply impacted her formative years,
delaying her self-acceptance and exploration until much later in life. From
2017 to 2019, her solo work helped her navigate, express, and reclaim her
identity, embracing a queer phenomenological approach to her perception.
Between 2020 and 2023 her live practice transitioned to include painting and
sculpture, alongside ongoing academic and multimodal writing. During this
period, she became more comfortable with her authentic sense of being a
trans-femme person, appreciating her pansexuality and the power of no longer
running from her disabilities. Today, her interdisciplinary practice spans
performance art, visual art, and curation; it engages with transgender studies,
queer theory, crip theory, and queer phenomenology. Despite facing personal and
systemic adversity and being the victim of incidents of hate crime for living
her life as herself, her current work explores hope amid oppression. She
advocates for a radically queer reimagining of traditional phenomenology,
curation and academia. And, through the lens of queer acts of hope, she explores
transdisciplinary practices that move beyond trauma, while acknowledging its
existence and the oppressions that cause it, to advocate for positive
possibilities for the future.
PhD Supervision EnquiriesIf you are interested in being supervised for your PhD, Dr T. J. Bacon is open to applications via two institutions. The Guildhall School of Music and DramaThis Postgraduate Research Programme has a distinctive focus on research in, through and for the performing arts. As a world-leading conservatoire, they welcome research projects that integrate creative practice with scholarly enquiry. A unique aspect of the researcher experience at Guildhall (UK) is the year-long training programme during the first year of study which equipes PGR’s with the tools to vision and realize a project. This is in addition to the supervisory team, a bespoke set of advisors who have the appropriate combination of academic and artistic expertise to supervise your work as it develops. Apply Here&#38;nbsp;Trans Art Institute for Creative ResearchThis is validated by Liverpool John Moores University (UK) and delivered by the TransArt Institute (USA). This is a low-residency programme (supporting global participation) focused towards transdisciplinary practice/research. The Creative Research PhD is for everyone who desires to: bring their praxis to a significantly new level in terms of creation and articulation; to contribute beyond their particular field to a broader artistic/academic context; to teach at all levels, transdisciplinarily or in more than one field; to continue to exhibit, publish, curate, and perform in and beyond our international community. This programme draws together its international cohort at key points in the year and supports them with tailored expertise.
Apply Here&#38;nbsp;
Important Note
When applying to either insitution it is very important to name Dr Tōmei June Bacon as part of your preferred supervision team.

		<description>WritingDr Tōmei June Bacon’s academic research and other writing is published under the name T. J. Bacon. She does this to draw distinction between her visual art practice and her writing. However she acknowledges the blurring between both through framing her written practice as an artist-philosopher. She is particularly interested in exploring writing that queers traditions of scholarly correctness, disrupting what is appropriate “form”, and will write to explore multimodal frames of expression; enhancing both the capture of phenomenological encounters and the way in which we experience reading them.

		<description>2024-. TRANS HOPE
	CW: contemporary transgender lived experience.Commencing in 2024, she returns to the elemental materiality that has been consistent throughout her practice to began a new phase drawing upon an avocational interest in queered applications of esoterica. A protective invocation for the trans+ lived experience emerges to queer the linear perception of time and challenge seemingly immovable oppressions faced by herself and her community.

Foregrounding esoteric measures of time such as through Queer Moon Magick (invoking the divine feminine) and Seasonal Sabbats, the trans+ lived experience is protected and elevated. While linear time, which can seem to dictate a loss of agency forcibly upon trans+ bodies, becomes challenged as the dominant measure for any trans+ experience.&#38;nbsp;

Her current artistic practice is therefore an act of resistance where hope is held in the queered esoteric: change is real, but time is not. Time is only a reflection of the seasons of change. Here the artist will respond to the queer elemental materiality of Fire, Water, Earth, Air, and Spirit across an interdisciplinary practice that celebrates elemental rebirth for trans+ people through mediums such as painting, sculpture, and ritualised acts of performance, protection, endurance and hope.

		<description>2020-2023 HONOURING SURVIVAL
	CW: Artworks during this period feature reference to mental health and transgender lived experience.
As the world suffered the trauma of the COVID-19 pandemic, many found the imposition of geographical lockdown shifted the way we understood and experienced our daily life. Grief and loss was a constant for all but a need for hope emerged.

2020 marked tjb’s 40th birthday and in the year following CHTHONIC, she continued to openly acknowledged the beginning of her journey through transition. Expressions of her own authenticity were foregrounded as she became increasingly comfortable with her gender, sexuality and hidden disabilities. Her artistic practice through this period honoured surviving the trauma that had forcibly repressed and almost destroyed her in her formative years through Section 28. And though suffering would continue to be present in the lives of everyone through the pandemic, this was an important period to centre and ground herself in queer hope.

Her practice during 2020 to 2023 would evolve across painting and sculpture, alongside her ongoing and expanding work as an author and scholar (under the name T. J. Bacon) exploring queer phenomenology and multimodal forms of writing.

		<description>Love// Rage//Love// Rage// would manifest over 5 variations. Each capturing tjb’s love of working in oil as a process that challenges the artist with patience and captures an often extended period of time in her process, whereby she may begin an image years before finally settling upon a conclusion. For tjb, oil painting is durational performance, capturing movement and immobility. Love// Rage// is a good example of this, commencing prior to the outbreak of COVID-19, the artist first making marks in 2019 and documenting an evolution of frustration and turmoil from the external world up against the love, care and support in their private life.&#38;nbsp;

		<description>Black CrossThe black cross represents survival. Originating for tjb in 2016 and emerging into xis practice post-residency at the Sidney Nolan Trust in 2017. It would not be exhibited in any form until its use in CHTHONIC in 2019. Where, at the end of 17 hour durational action, the ash and bone remains of 500 knuckles were bound and sealed into the black cross motif and left as installation.&#38;nbsp;

The images of the before and the after were created over an extended period of thought and reflection on tjb’s “in/visible” hidden disabled lived experience.
